Day 11 — Introduction to Divisional Charts (Vargas)

Divisional charts subdivide each rashi into smaller segments — D9 (Navamsha) for marriage and dharma, D10 for career, D7 for children, D60 for past karma. The depth tool of Vedic.

Lesson

Day eleven: divisional charts (vargas). This is one of Vedic's most distinctive features and has no real Western equivalent. The concept: each of the 12 rashis can be subdivided into smaller segments, with each segment mapping to its own zodiac sign. The resulting 'divisional chart' shows specific life-area placements for the same planets in your birth chart.

The sixteen standard divisional charts (Shodasavarga) cover specific life areas: D1 (Rashi, the main chart), D2 (Hora, wealth), D3 (Drekkana, siblings), D4 (Chaturthamsha, fortune/property), D7 (Saptamsha, children), D9 (Navamsha, spouse/dharma), D10 (Dasamsha, career), D12 (Dwadashamsha, parents), D16 (Shodasamsha, vehicles/comforts), D20 (Vimsamsha, spiritual practice), D24 (Chaturvimsamsha, learning), D27 (Bhamsha, strengths), D30 (Trimsamsha, evils/health), D40 (Chatvarimsamsha, maternal), D45 (Akshavedamsha, paternal), D60 (Shashtiamsha, past karma).

The most-used in practical work: D9 (Navamsha) — covered separately tomorrow. D10 (Dasamsha) for career. D7 (Saptamsha) for children. D12 (Dwadashamsha) for parents. D60 (Shashtiamsha) for past-life karmic patterns. Most readings use D1 + D9 + D10 as the working baseline; specialized questions add the relevant divisional chart for that life area.

How to read divisional charts: the same principles as the main chart (signs, houses, aspects, dignities) but interpreted in the specific life-area context. Mars in Leo in your D1 chart shows your general martian energy through Leo. Mars in your D10 (career chart) shows how that energy specifically expresses in career — which sign it's in within D10, which house, which aspects matter for career questions specifically.

Vargottama positions: when a planet is in the same sign in both D1 and a specific divisional chart (often discussed regarding D9), it's vargottama in that varga. Vargottama placements are particularly strong; the planet's qualities express consistently across the rashi-varga pair. Mars vargottama in D9 = Mars's qualities express strongly and consistently in marriage/dharma matters.

For today: generate your D9 chart (we'll deep-dive tomorrow). Notice which signs your planets fall in — they will mostly be different from your D1 sign placements. The pattern of D9 placements reveals dimensions of you that D1 alone misses.

Today's exercise

Generate your D9 (Navamsha) chart. Note which signs your Sun, Moon, Mars, Venus, and Ascendant lord fall in. Compare to D1. Observe which planets are vargottama (same sign in both charts). The vargottama placements often correspond to life areas where you express consistently and strongly.

Key takeaways

  • Divisional charts subdivide each rashi into smaller segments mapping to zodiac signs.
  • Sixteen standard divisional charts cover specific life areas.
  • Most-used: D1 + D9 + D10 as practical baseline.
  • Vargottama: same sign in D1 and a divisional chart = particularly strong placement.
  • Read divisional charts with same principles as main chart, but life-area-specific context.

FAQ

Why are there 16 standard divisional charts?

Classical Vedic tradition systematized 16 divisional charts (Shodasavarga = 16 vargas), each addressing a specific life area. Beyond these 16, additional divisional charts exist (D81 for spiritual karma, D108, D144) but are rarely used in working practice. The 16 cover most practical life questions.

How do divisional charts differ from house systems?

Houses divide the local sky based on birth time/location into 12 segments. Divisional charts subdivide each zodiac sign into smaller segments mapping to other zodiac signs. Houses tell you where in the daily/local cycle you are; divisions tell you specific life-area placements within your zodiac structure. Different concepts, both important.

Should I learn all 16 divisional charts?

Eventually if you go deep. For working practice, master D1 + D9 + D10 first (most readings use these three). Add D7 if children-focused, D12 if parents-focused, D60 for past-karma work. Most working Vedic astrologers use 5-7 divisional charts regularly; the rest are for specialized questions.

What's vargottama exactly?

When a planet occupies the same zodiac sign in both D1 (rashi) and a specific divisional chart. Most commonly discussed for D9 (D1-D9 vargottama), but the term applies to any varga. Vargottama placements are strong because the planet's qualities express consistently across both reference frames.

Are divisional chart readings as reliable as main chart readings?

Within their specific domain, yes. D10 readings of career questions are often more revealing than D1 alone for career; D9 readings for marriage are essential. The combination of D1 + relevant divisional chart is the standard; using D1 alone for specialized questions misses information that the divisional charts provide.
