Common questions

About ingresses

What is a cardinal ingress?

A cardinal ingress is the moment the Sun enters one of the four cardinal signs — Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn. The Aries ingress is the spring equinox; Cancer is the summer solstice; Libra is the autumn equinox; Capricorn is the winter solstice. In classical mundane astrology, the chart cast for the moment of the Aries ingress is read as the year chart for a nation or region — its tone, its emphases, its likely tensions.

How is this used in practice?

The Aries ingress chart is the foundational mundane chart. Practitioners read its angles (Ascendant, MC), the planets in angular houses, and the major aspects to predict the year's general weather for the location it's cast for. Quarter ingresses (Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) refine the reading for each three-month stretch. We default the location to Greenwich for the page preview; serious mundane work casts the chart for the specific city or region in question.

Why these four signs?

The cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) are the initiators of the zodiac — each one starts a new season and a new energetic quadrant. Classical sources read the Sun's entry into a cardinal sign as a moment of fresh impetus where the year's (or quarter's) energy is set. The fixed and mutable signs are read in their own seasons but don't carry the same chart-cast significance for mundane work.
