Common questions

About planet-in-house placements

What does 'planet in house' mean in astrology?

A planet in a house indicates the area of life where that planet's function expresses most strongly. The houses are the twelve life-domains of the chart (1st = self, 7th = partnership, 10th = career, etc.), and a planet falling into a house brings its energy and themes to that life-area. Sun in the 10th house, for example, focuses identity on career and public role; Moon in the 4th roots emotional life in home and family.

How do I find which house each of my planets is in?

House placements depend on your exact birth time and location, not just date. With those, a chart calculator looks up where each planet was, then computes the houses based on your local horizon (Ascendant) at birth. Without an accurate birth time, house placements can be off — even 30 minutes can shift planets across house boundaries. Our birth chart tool computes them precisely once you supply time + location.

Are house placements more important than sign placements?

They’re different scales. Sign tells you the style and texture of how a planet expresses (Mars in Aries is direct, Mars in Cancer is protective). House tells you the area of life where it shows up most (Mars in 1st house at the body / identity level, Mars in 10th at career). Mature reading uses both — the sign tells you how, the house tells you where.

What is an angular house and why does it matter?

Angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) sit on the four major axes of the chart — Ascendant, IC, Descendant, MC. Planets in angular houses tend to be more pronounced in expression than the same planet in a cadent house, because the angles act as the chart’s loudest channels. Saturn in the 10th house (angular, career) lands harder than Saturn in the 9th (cadent). The angular vs cadent distinction is one of the oldest and most reliable practical heuristics in astrology.
