Moon-piercing breath — inhaling through the left nostril (lunar / ida channel) and exhaling through the right. Activates the cooling, calming, receptive lunar-channel energy.

What this practice is

Chandra bhedana pranayama ("moon-piercing breath") activates ida nadi — the lunar, cooling, receptive energy channel that runs through the left nostril. The practice consists of inhaling exclusively through the left nostril and exhaling through the right. The asymmetric pattern emphasizes the lunar channel, producing cooling, calming, and settling effects.

Chandra bhedana is the complement to surya bhedana. Where surya bhedana warms and energizes, chandra bhedana cools and calms. The two practices form a complementary pair for working with the body's energetic asymmetry.

Chandra bhedana is appropriate for evening practice, hot conditions, anxiety, and pitta-fire imbalance states. The practice has substantial calming effects and is among the most useful pranayamas for sleep difficulty and stress reduction.

Technique

1. Sit upright. Use the right hand: thumb closes the right nostril; ring finger closes the left nostril.

2. Begin with normal breathing for several breaths.

3. Close the right nostril with the thumb. Inhale slowly through the left nostril. Count of 4-6.

4. Close the left nostril with the ring finger (both nostrils now closed). Hold the breath briefly — count of 2-4 (optional; beginners can skip).

5. Release the thumb; keep the ring finger closing the left nostril. Exhale slowly through the right nostril. Count of 4-8.

6. That's one round. Continue for 5-15 rounds.

7. After completing rounds, return to normal breathing for a minute.

Key distinction from nadi shodhana: chandra bhedana inhales ONLY through the left nostril every round.

When to use

(1) Hot conditions. The cooling effect supports body comfort in hot weather.

(2) Anxiety states. The calming effect provides direct support for anxious states.

(3) Evening practice. Chandra bhedana is evening-appropriate; supports transition to sleep.

(4) Before sleep. The cooling and calming effects support sleep onset.

(5) For pitta-dosha imbalance (Ayurvedic context). Pitta is the fire dosha; chandra bhedana specifically reduces pitta.

(6) For high blood pressure. The parasympathetic activation supports modest BP reduction.

Contraindications & safety

Generally safe. Cautions:

- Cold weather. The cooling effect can produce excessive chill. - Severe depression. The calming effect can deepen depressive states for some practitioners. - Active respiratory illness with congestion in left nostril. - Asthma in active flare.

The practice is gentler than surya bhedana with fewer contraindications. Most practitioners can do chandra bhedana without concerns.

Benefits

Traditionally: activates ida nadi (lunar channel); produces cooling and calming effects; supports relaxation and sleep; reduces pitta dosha; complements surya bhedana for full ida-pingala balance work.

From contemporary research: left-nostril emphasis correlates with parasympathetic activation, slight reduction in heart rate, and stress marker reduction. The cooling and calming effects are consistent with this autonomic profile.

History

Chandra bhedana appears in classical hatha yoga texts alongside surya bhedana as the complementary pair. The two practices have been continuously taught together for centuries.

Cultural context

Chandra bhedana is widely shared across yoga traditions and is appropriate for non-traditional practice with respect.

FAQ

Is this safe for everyone?

Yes for most practitioners. Generally gentle and safe; fewer contraindications than warming practices. Avoid in cold weather (cooling adds to existing cold) and during active depression (the calming effect can deepen depressive states for some).

Will this help me sleep?

For most practitioners, yes. Chandra bhedana before sleep supports parasympathetic activation and produces felt-calming. Try 5-10 minutes in bed before sleep; effects often felt within first session.

Can I do this anytime?

Particularly suited for evening, hot conditions, anxiety states, and pre-sleep. Daytime use is fine; the calming effect can produce some sluggishness in active workdays. Adjust based on what your day requires.

How is this different from nadi shodhana?

Nadi shodhana: alternates breath between nostrils symmetrically — balances both channels. Chandra bhedana: every round inhales left and exhales right — emphasizes lunar channel only. Different effects — nadi shodhana balances; chandra bhedana cools and calms.

Should I use this with surya bhedana?

Optional. Many practitioners use surya bhedana in morning (warming for the day) and chandra bhedana in evening (cooling for sleep). The pair complements; using both at appropriate times produces fuller benefits.
