Moon phase guide
First Quarter
Half the moon is lit. Half your plan is working. Time to deal with the half that isn't.
Overview
The first quarter moon is the halfway point between the new moon and the full moon. It shows up as a clean half-circle in the sky, and energetically it's exactly that — half and half. Half momentum, half resistance. This is where things get real.
If the new moon was the plan and the waxing crescent was the first step, the first quarter is the first obstacle. Something will push back. A plan won't work the way you thought. A person won't cooperate. Your own discipline will waver. This isn't the universe testing you. It's just reality reminding you that growth requires adaptation.
This phase demands decisions. Not someday decisions — now decisions. What are you going to do about the thing that's not working? Adjust the plan or recommit to it? Either is fine. Sitting in indecision is not. The first quarter rewards action, even imperfect action.
Spellwork guidance
First quarter spellwork is about overcoming obstacles and making decisions. This is the phase for strength spells, clarity workings, and anything that helps you push through resistance. The energy is active and a little confrontational — use it.
Spells for courage, clear communication, and problem-solving thrive here. If you need to have a difficult conversation, set a boundary, or make a choice you've been avoiding, the first quarter moon has your back.
Avoid passive, receptive magic during this phase. It's not the time for dreamy meditations or gentle intention-setting. The first quarter wants you to do something. Cast a spell, make a plan, take a stand. Movement is the medicine here.
Ritual ideas
Write down the biggest obstacle between you and your new moon intention. Be specific. Then write down three possible ways to deal with it. Light an orange or red candle for action and courage. Read the solutions out loud. Pick one and commit to it before the candle burns out.
Do a decisiveness ritual. Hold a coin in your hands — heads for one option, tails for another. Before you flip it, notice which outcome you're hoping for. That's your answer. The coin is just a mirror.
Take a walk outside under the half moon. As you walk, mentally list everything that's working and everything that isn't. When you get home, write down one adjustment you're going to make this week. Not a total overhaul — one adjustment.

Frequently asked questions
Why does everything feel harder during the first quarter moon?
Because it is harder. The first quarter is when the tension between where you are and where you're going peaks for the first time in the cycle. It's not a sign that things are going wrong — it's a sign that you're actually pushing toward something real.
Is the first quarter moon good for spellwork?
Very good, if your spellwork is action-oriented. Spells for courage, strength, decision-making, and breaking through blocks are perfect here. Save the gentle, receptive stuff for other phases.
What if I haven't made progress on my new moon intentions?
Then the first quarter is your wake-up call. Ask yourself honestly — did you not make progress because the intention was wrong, or because you didn't follow through? Different problems need different solutions.
Can I start new projects during the first quarter?
You can, but the energy favors pushing through on existing projects rather than starting fresh. If something new genuinely needs to happen, go for it. But don't start new things as a way to avoid the hard part of what you already started.
