Overview

Aspen's defining feature — leaves that quake and rustle in even the slightest breeze, due to their flattened stems — gave the tree its 'quaking' name and its long folkloric association with communication, whispered secrets, and the voice of fear finally being spoken aloud.

Some European folklore held that aspen's constant trembling came from the tree's supposed use in making the cross, cursing it to shake forever afterward — a later Christian overlay on what was likely already an older association between the tree's visible restlessness and human anxiety.
