Crystal guide
Chrysoberyl
The golden-green beryllium aluminum oxide that contains a mysterious cat's eye light — chrysoberyl is discipline, focus, and the slender edge of clarity.
Overview
Chrysoberyl is beryllium aluminum oxide (BeAl2O4) — related in name only to beryl (they are different minerals despite the similar names). It is exceptionally hard at Mohs 8.5 and typically yellow, green, or brown. The most famous varieties are cat's eye chrysoberyl (cymophane), which displays chatoyancy — a moving light band resembling a cat's pupil — and alexandrite, which changes color under different light.
Major sources include Brazil, Sri Lanka, Madagascar, and East Africa.
Energetically, chrysoberyl is traditionally called the stone of discipline. It is associated with focus, concentration, and protection.

Common misconceptions
"Chrysoberyl is beryl."
Despite the name, they are different minerals. Beryl is beryllium aluminum silicate; chrysoberyl is beryllium aluminum oxide.
"All cat's eye stones are chrysoberyl."
Cat's eye effect (chatoyancy) occurs in many minerals — quartz, tiger's eye, apatite, etc. True cat's eye refers specifically to chrysoberyl.
"Chrysoberyl and chrysolite are the same."
Chrysolite is a historic name for peridot, a different mineral.
Safety notes
Non-toxic for handling. Extremely durable at Mohs 8.5. Safe for all cleansing methods. Contains beryllium but bound safely within structure.
