Venus and Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio — Autumn 2026

Two personal planets are moving backward through the same sign this autumn, and the internet has already decided it's a catastrophe. It isn't. But it is unusual enough to be worth reading properly.

Venus turned retrograde in early October in Scorpio and is already walking itself back toward Libra. Mercury joins it on October 24, stationing retrograde at around 21° Scorpio, and both turn direct around the same time in mid-November — Mercury on November 13. For three weeks, the planet of what we value and the planet of how we say it are both reviewing their work in the sign that refuses to keep things on the surface.

That's the actual picture. Here is what it means, what it doesn't, and what I'd do with it.

What a retrograde is — and isn't

Nothing reverses. A retrograde is a perspective effect: from Earth, a planet appears to slow, stop, and drift backward against the zodiac because of where we are in our own orbit relative to it. The classical reading has never been "things break." It's that the function a planet governs turns inward for a while. External momentum slows; internal review speeds up.

Mercury governs speech, contracts, messages, the small logistics of a day. Venus governs attraction, money, taste, and what we're willing to trade for what we want. When both are retrograde, the question in front of most people isn't "what will go wrong?" It's "what have I been agreeing to without looking at it?"

Why Scorpio matters here

Scorpio is the sign of what sits underneath — shared money, debt, intimacy, the things people know about each other and don't say. Retrogrades in Scorpio rarely produce dramatic new events. They produce disclosures. The conversation you avoided in August comes back. The subscription you forgot about shows up on the statement. The feeling you filed under "fine" turns out not to be.

Put Venus and Mercury there together and the theme gets specific: the gap between what you value and what you've said out loud.

What is actually real

Here's what I see hold up, season after season, across a lot of charts:

  • Old contact resurfaces. Exes, former colleagues, the friend you drifted from. This is the most reliable retrograde signature there is, and it's usually less dramatic than people fear. Most of these messages are closure, not a restart.
  • Agreements get re-examined. Leases, freelance terms, the unspoken deal inside a relationship about who carries what. Review is the point. You don't have to sign nothing for three weeks — you have to read what you sign.
  • Spending regret gets louder. Venus retrograde is famously bad for impulse luxury purchases, and it's not superstition so much as attention: you notice value differently when Venus is reviewing. If you feel the urge to buy the expensive thing to fix a mood, wait until after mid-November and see if you still want it.
  • Communication needs one more pass. Not because Mercury eats your texts, but because people are more likely to read tone into them. Reread before you send anything that matters.

What is internet nonsense

Your phone will not break because of Mercury. Your flight is not more likely to be cancelled. You do not need to postpone your wedding, and you absolutely do not need to break up with someone because "Venus retrograde exposes everything." If something in your relationship gets exposed this autumn, it was already there. The retrograde just turned the lights up.

The other piece of nonsense is that you should do nothing for three weeks. Life doesn't pause for an ephemeris. Retrograde periods are excellent for anything with a "re-" in front of it — revise, repair, reconnect, renegotiate, reread. They're weaker for launching something brand-new that depends on everyone being on the same page immediately.

How I'd use the window

Make a short list before October 24 of the three agreements in your life you haven't looked at in a while. One about money, one about a relationship, one about your time. Revisit one each week. That's it — that's the whole practice, and it's more useful than any amount of retrograde anxiety.

If something important has to be signed between October 24 and November 13, sign it carefully rather than not at all. Read the whole thing. Ask the question you'd normally be too polite to ask. Get the verbal agreement in writing.

For relationships, use Venus retrograde the way it actually works best: talk about what you each want, not what you each did. Scorpio rewards honesty more than tact. A clumsy honest sentence this month will do more good than a polished evasive one.

And if an old flame reaches out — pause before you answer. Ask whether you're responding to the person or to the version of yourself you were when you knew them. Both are valid reasons to reply. Only one of them is a reason to restart.

Reading it for your own chart

The general picture is the same for everyone. Where it lands is not. These retrogrades fall in a specific house in your birth chart, and that house tells you which area of life is doing the reviewing — money for one person, a creative project for another, a family pattern for a third.

The retrograde calendar lists every station over the next two years, computed live, so you can see this cycle and the next one coming. If you want to see where this pair lands in your own chart, an astrology reading will walk you through it house by house. And if what's surfacing this month is less a calendar question and more a heart question, a session with me is the slower, more personal version.

Mercury and Venus both turn forward in mid-November. Whatever you've reviewed by then, you'll carry forward with your eyes open. That's the gift of this one — not a crisis, just a very thorough audit.
