How it’s computed

Each 30° sign splits into sixty 30' parts, with each part assigned a name and ruling deity in classical tradition. The 30' resolution makes the D60 highly birth-time-sensitive.

What the Shashtiamsa reads

The Shashtiamsa (D60) divides each 30° sign into sixty 30' parts — half a degree each. Classical sources name it the most important divisional chart in the entire Shodashavarga system. Sage Parashara is recorded as saying that the D60 is so important that one rasi-equivalent of strength in the D60 outweighs many vargas of strength elsewhere.

Practitioners consult the D60 when reading the deepest karmic layer of the chart. The 30' resolution is so fine that small birth-time errors significantly shift the D60 — a common reason traditional practice insists on birth-time rectification before serious D60 analysis. When the time is reliable, the D60 produces remarkably specific readings about past-life karma and the subtlest current of the present life.

Modern Vedic practitioners sometimes treat the D60 as the 'oversight' chart — a final check that confirms or qualifies what every other varga has indicated. A planet that looks strong everywhere but weak in the D60 is read as carrying a karmic shadow that will shape its fruit; a planet that looks weak everywhere but strong in the D60 is read as having genuine deep support despite surface appearances.

How to read it

Read the D60 last, after all other vargas. Look for vargottama placements (a planet in the same sign in Rasi and D60 — exceptionally strong), the dignity of the D60 placement of every planet, and any concentration of malefics in difficult houses of the D60.

Pitfalls

The D60 is unreliable when the birth time is uncertain. A 4-minute birth-time error can shift the D60 placements by a full sign. Always rectify birth time before treating D60 readings as decisive.
