Common questions
About the current-sky dashboard
What does this dashboard show?
Where every classical body sits on the zodiac at this moment — Sun, Moon, Mercury through Pluto — by sign and degree, with retrograde flags. The aspects currently forming between them (within applying orb). The Moon's phase, illumination, and current sign. Whether the Moon is void of course. Every upcoming sign-ingress over the next 30 days. And any eclipses falling in the surrounding months. The page refreshes every 15 minutes; the underlying ephemeris is VSOP87D + ELP2000, the same engine that powers the Birth Chart tool.
Why doesn't this need a location?
Ecliptic positions — Sun in Cancer 12°, Moon in Scorpio 4° — are location-independent. They're the same everywhere on Earth at the same instant. What location does change is the Ascendant and the house cusps; for those, use the free Birth Chart tool. The aspects shown here are sky-to-sky, not natal-to-transit, so no birth chart is needed.
How are the aspects computed?
Major Western aspects (conjunction, opposition, trine, square, sextile) between every body pair, evaluated by the angular separation of their longitudes against the standard orb tables: 8° for conjunction and opposition, 6° for trine and square, 4° for sextile. Aspects involving the luminaries (Sun, Moon) get an extra degree of orb. We mark each aspect as applying (closing) or separating (widening) based on the bodies' relative speeds. Sorted by tightest orb first.
What does 'void of course' mean?
The Moon is void of course from the moment it makes its last applying aspect to a classical planet (Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn) in its current sign until it crosses into the next sign. Traditional Western practice treats the void window as a fallow time — finish what's already started, don't initiate. The window can range from a few minutes to a full day. We surface the current state with the next sign-change time so you know how long it lasts.
Why does retrograde matter?
When a planet appears retrograde (moving backwards relative to the stars), traditional astrology reads it as a slowing-down or internalizing influence on the matters that planet rules. Mercury retrograde gets the most attention (communication, contracts, transit), but Venus, Mars, and the outer planets all have retrograde windows. The retrograde flag here matches the engine's exact direction-of-motion check, not a calendar approximation.
How does this differ from the Lunar Calendar?
The Lunar Calendar shows a month-by-month grid of Moon phases, sign-ingresses, and eclipses — a planning surface. Current Sky is a snapshot: the planets right now, the aspects forming right now, what's about to change. Use the Lunar Calendar to plan around moon cycles; use Current Sky to read the moment.
Computation
Planet positions from VSOP87D (Mercury through Neptune) and a home-grown DOPRI8 8(7) integrator for Pluto. Moon from a truncated ELP2000 lunar model with deltaT correction. Sun and Moon to sub-arcsecond accuracy; the rest to arcsecond-grade. Aspects evaluated with standard orbs (8° conjunction/opposition, 6° trine/square, 4° sextile; +1° for luminaries). Page revalidates every 15 minutes; the underlying engine call is uncached so the snapshot you see was computed at most that long ago.
