Common questions

About the lunar calendar

What does the lunar calendar show?

Every major Moon phase for the month — new, first quarter, full, last quarter — with the exact engine-computed datetime. The Moon's sign each day, derived from real boundary crossings (the Moon changes sign every ~2.3 days). Solar and lunar eclipses if any fall in the month. And the live current Moon: phase name, illuminated fraction, and the sign it's in right now.

How accurate are the times?

Arcsecond-grade. Phase moments come from a truncated ELP2000 lunar model with deltaT correction; sign-ingresses are computed by solving Moon longitude = boundary degree to within seconds of arc. The same ephemerides are used by the free Birth Chart tool. Phase times are shown in your browser's local time-zone.

Why is the Moon's sign meaningful?

In Western practice, the Moon-sign sets the emotional weather of the day — whether the body and feelings tilt toward action (fire), grounding (earth), thought (air), or feeling (water), with the sign's specific tone on top. In Vedic practice, the Moon's nakshatra (lunar mansion) is the primary daily timing reference. Either way, the day the Moon shifts sign is felt — moods change a few hours before the boundary, then settle into the new tone.

What's a 'void of course' Moon?

The window between the Moon's last applying aspect to a classical planet in its current sign and its ingress into the next sign. Traditionally a fallow window — start nothing important, finish what's already begun. This calendar marks Moon sign-ingress times; the void window is the period from each sign-ingress backwards to the prior major aspect (we surface the duration on a separate void-of-course feed).

How do I read the eclipse markers?

Solar eclipses fall on a new moon; lunar eclipses fall on a full moon. They mark karmic-axis activations in classical astrology — the Moon's nodes are conjunct one of the luminaries at the moment of eclipse. Eclipses don't always shift moods on the day; their effect tends to unfold over the six months until the next eclipse pair, with re-activation as planets transit the eclipse degree.

Computation

Phase moments from a truncated ELP2000 lunar model with deltaT. Sign-ingresses by solving Moon longitude = boundary degree. Eclipses from the engine’s eclipse-finding pass over the full year (we filter to the displayed month). Quarter phases are seeded from each engine-computed new moon and offset by 7.38d (first quarter) / 22.15d (last quarter) — within ~6 hours of the true moments, adequate for calendar grids. The current snapshot at the top of the page comes from a live engine call and refreshes every 6 hours.
